Hey,

In keeping with the theme of watching old movies that I missed, I decided to travel down a detour and watch every episode of “Jersey Shore”. The show was iconic for good and bad reasons, and I felt it fit with the premise of experiencing huge pop culture moments in entertainment now. Similar to the other Movie Club newsletters, I’m going to post my thoughts after watching all six seasons. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

Hey,

2021 has been just as eventful as 2020 was. We had an insurrection, people still haven’t received the rest of their stimulus money, Mr. Potato Head is now gender neutral, and last but not least the world is still racist. I need to thank Meyers Leonard for bringing that back to everyone’s attention.

Leonard is an NBA player who played for last year’s bubble championship runner-up Miami Heat. He’s a decent rotational option big man who is able to stretch the floor with his outside shooting but I’ve digressed. Leonard had season-ending shoulder surgery last month and has been…

Hey,

I hope everyone’s bracket is as busted as mine. The round of 32 finishes today and halfway through the round of 32 not a single perfect bracket remains. This year’s March Madness tournament has lived up to the hype after last year’s edition was cancelled, and there have been no shortage of upsets. Although upset wins by Ohio, Abilene Christian, North Texas and Oregon State were impressive, none were more impressive than two consecutive wins by Oral Roberts University.

Oral Roberts University is a tiny private school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is named after famed Evangelical Christian Oral Roberts

Hey,

This past weekend was the first weekend in a very long time without any football. It made me miss the sport but I remembered that a new NFL season is approaching quickly, along with some teams having new head coaches. Now that the Houston Texans have finalized the last vacant head coaching slot I figured it was time to examine the newest appointed company men, I mean head coaches, for the upcoming NFL season. …

Hey,

We’ve reached the end of the shortest month of the year, aka Black History Month. It’s definitely not racist that Black History Month is the shortest month of the year, but I’ve digressed. This is the February installment of Useless Observations and the previous installment can be found here. Shall we?

Hey,

I have a moderate collection of trading cards at my parents’ house. I used to spend my allowance money on new packs of football, baseball and basketball playing cards. I would keep them in special sleeves because trading cards were one of a handful of places to learn more about the players. The other ones were magazine interviews and press conferences but interaction with these athletes was rare, which increased each card’s value.

Growing up, I used…

Hey,

The music industry and TikTok go hand in hand in these unprecedented times. Every hit single has a corresponding choreographed dance, and it’s almost like the songs that rise, or return, to the top of the charts are because of TikTok popularity. There’s even a Spotify playlist for nothing but current TikTok viral songs, and possibly that playlist will include music from none other than Prince.

Prince, the legendary artist from Minnesota, was one of music’s biggest…

Hey,

I have a few friends that are lawyers and I always give them crap for it. I wanted to be a lawyer growing up after reading the biography of Thurgood Marshall but I never followed through on it. It’s not that I don’t respect lawyers. The great ones are damn good at what they do. Unfortunately, great lawyers are always behind some of the most questionable loopholes in the business world.

This week, Dish Network announced that they were partnering with DraftKings to advertise betting lines on their cable sports broadcasts. In some instances, they will even allow live…

Hey,

There’s been a lot of talk in recent years about the need to raise the minimum wage in our country. One of Joe Biden’s main campaign promises was raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, but each state has their own minimum wage with some being as low as $7.25. Whether you’re for or against raising minimum wage, I wanted to take a step back and figure out what these numbers mean in real world dollars.

If you’re making $7.25 an hour and you work a 40-hour work week, you are making $290 a week before taxes…

Hey,

I’ve been a huge sports fan my entire life. I used to play various sports as a kid and I would get all of the sports video games so that I could pretend to be all of my favorite players. I then started following star athletes from my hometown and their athletic successes including Ronald Curry, Michael Vick and Allen Iverson and their respective teams. …
