Hey,

For today’s newsletter I thought I might try something different. I’ll still have Useless Observations for September next week, but today I wanted to share some Useful Observations. Let’s do this.

UO #1: Rest in peace to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I haven’t seen it yet but I plan to watch “On The Basis of Sex” in the near future. I expect an incredible amount of hypocrisy between now and the election in regards to trying to rush through a replacement Supreme Court justice.

UO #2: If you haven’t watched the new “Mulan” movie on Disney+, don’t. You’re not missing anything and it’s definitely not worth $30. All of my favorite parts about the original — the music, the banter, Mushu — have been removed for this new watered down, more realistic film. With everything having to be politically correct, we’re losing a lot of our imagination and creativity when it comes to filmmaking.

UO #3: Ten NFL starting quarterbacks for Week 1 were Black. They were Chargers’ Tyrod Taylor, Texans’ Deshaun Watson, Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Ravens’ Lamar Jackson, Cardinals’ Kyler Murray, Cowboys’ Dak Prescott, Panthers’ Teddy Bridgewater, Seahawks’ Russell Wilson, Patriots’ Cam Newton, and Dwayne Haskins of the Washington Washingtons. This is historic for a myriad of reasons, but now we need to address the lack of Black NFL head coaches.

UO #4: Because of Coronavirus the NFL chose to not have any preseason games this year. That decision is proving to be the worst possible decision as Week 2 teams were ravaged by injuries. It’s almost like human bodies need an acclimation period to go from sitting on the couch to playing a professional sport. Who knew?

UO #5: We’ve officially been on Covid-19 related lockdown so long that we now have the first network television show about quarantine. NBC’s “Connecting” is going to be full of jokes about Zoom, social distancing and the like and it’s premiering October 1. Prayers up for anyone that has been impacted by Covid and another plea to get everyone to make smart decisions to help lessen the spread.
